It was 23 years ago today that I married my best friend. I painted this for him at lunch today. I'm not sure how it started, or why it stuck around, but hogs became our "thing" (so some couples have pink roses, we have large pink barnyard animals). But I'm glad. I mean, what says true love better than the call of "Sooooo-ey!"?
Since I've been traveling down memory lane, thought I'd post my latest lunch-scape. I was in Pennsylvania in May and came home via the Harrisburg airport. Going south on 15, the Susquehanna river follows the road for miles before you reach Harrisburg. Route 15 is a four-lane now but oldsters like me remember when it was two lanes and looked much like this.
The internet truly is amazing. After remembering catching salamanders at a lake called Bear Wallow when I was a kid (see previous post), I did a search. There really is a lake in Pennsylvania called Bear Wallow, and some kind soul actually posted a photo of it. The vegetation is more grown up than I remember (aren't we all) but this is otherwise exactly what I remember. I'm amazed. The bears, I always believed, lived up the gravel road in the distance.
I know what you thought. You saw the title and thought, "Oh, yet another dog portrait, this one with a stick." Nope. I saw a salamander on my last trail run and remembered how many of these lovelies I caught as a child. We used to camp at a lake called Bearwallow (surely not its real name, but it did give my seven-year-old self a few unique visions!), and spent hours chasing these in the shallows of the lake. I can't remember what we did with them once caught. I prefer to think we released them. I don't think I knew then what a tomboy was, but I probably was one. Was? Who am I kidding? I prefer puppies over dolls. I have to be coerced into wearing makeup or jewelry. I'd much rather run with boys through the woods on muddy trails than go shopping at a mall. What do you call a grown-up tomboy? Monica!
Ever tried to paint a portrait from an ancient photo that measures about 2 inches by 1.5 inches that was taken with a flash and is all washed out? That was all that was left to remember Taz by, so Taz's mom wanted Taz's dad to have a little more than that. This will hang with Hannah Banana.
