Creating Depth, Part 2

2. Overlap objects. This is another of the still life composition fundamentals that can be effective in landscape painting. Take a look.

In Fran Ellisor’s Fisherman’s Cove (http://www.ellisorart.com/), the overlapping boats and shoreline add to the sense of depth and receding space:

Ned Mueller’s wonderful Paradise (http://www.nedmueller.com/) is another good example of overlapping items adding to the sense of space. You know there is distance between that big rock in the middle ground and the distant shore.
